There are several constructive things people can do.
* Watch our leaders on C-Span talk about the situation, such as what has changed since past events, that give more hope for resolution this time ... jot down the speakers there, and link to their organizations for more info
* The UN envoy reports back 10-5 Friday ... see what he has to say & what the various nations reactions is to that
* Boycott CHEVRON which is supporting the Junta to the tune of $ 2 billion a year ... send a clear message that money interests understand ... then when Chevron shuts down and some other Oil company moves in, boycott them also
* Urge Congress to take certain actions (see my question for what actions) ... we are giving a lot of aid to nations that are in turn giving lots of aid to Burma ... ask our political leaders to end that supply ... The Junta and its cronies have their money in off-shore banks like Singapore ... those accounts are vulnerable to outside pressure

Thailand blocks refugees from escaping ... the UN is real good at getting refugees resettled elsewhere ... urge it to do what it is good at.

Most importantly, we know from history that if Burma eases up, the news media and diplomats will go back to sleep, and focus on other things. We need to keep the pressure up.

The only hope for Burma is if elements in the army stage a coup. Aung San and the monks are incredible people, but the army has the guns. You and I and the whole rest of the world can object to what is going on but the junta does not care. I think even what India and China can do is limited. They are both poor countries beset by corruption so any sanctions they impose are likely to be porous and the generals know this. Japan could do more, and I don't know why they are not.

I used to be on pleasant phrases with a mullah in institution, a pleased, loving and first rate fellow who might be a credit score to any church or faith. It's well to have well Christians, Jews, and Muslims in a single's nation. It's unhealthy to have unhealthy Christians, Jews, and Muslims in a single's nation.
