For those of you who brush off America's new policy of torturing prisoners … I ask, what if those pictures of Abu Ghraib were American prisoners and Iraqi guards? What if the Iranians were setting up secret prisons full of Americans? What if North Korea set up a prison like Guantanamo full of Americans? How would you feel about that?

Do you realize that by justifying American torture, you justify Americans being tortured?

So far I've seen a lot of people dodging the question. Please think for a second. What if that was happening to Americans... all be it as tame as you say it is... what if? Would you be outraged? or would you brush it off as "fraternity hazing"?

I'm guessing by most of the anwers, that most people will have no problem with having our soldiers and civilians captured and tortured or held without reason or justice in the future... hey, I don't justify this stuff, and I think countries who do it are deplorable, but I thought the USA was better than that.

PNAC- no we shouldn't call the UN to complain. And by your reasoning, when/if it happens to Americans in an Iranian prison, we shouldn't complain then either.

The bottom line is that torture is illegal. We can not do it without being in violation of international law.

I see where everyone is so upset about Illegal aliens not following the law and how we (and I agree) should hold them to the law. Yet this hypocrisy that we show robs us of credibility.

This stance that people show of being tough on illegal immigration and soft on torture is just insane.

The law is the law. We have to be the better leaders and set the example to the rest of the world. We have to follow the same laws we demand enforced or we are no better than our own enemies.

Torture is a slippery slope. Anyone that "feels comfortable" with torture has a serious mental flaw.

So many of the people here boast about how they could do it. OK - go ahead - put up or shut up - go grab your nearest relative and torture them. If you can do that then you can torture anyone.

Torture is an act of evil, it is so easy to justify evil when you are so certain you are right.

I wonder - How many of you pro-torture people are Christians that hate Muslims?

If you are pro-torture I have to question your sanity.

torture has been proved to be an ineffectual way of obtaining information....(if you cause enough pain one will tell you whatever it takes to stop the pain) not necessarily the truth.
many believe that if they do it to Americans then it is o.k to do it to them....but where does it stop?
anyone willingly participating it torture should be tried for war crimes and sentenced appropriately. that includes Americans as well as other nationalities.
i know this may not be a popular view but it has to stop.

The problem with the argument of "if they do it than so shall we" is that it makes us no better than them. Before long, American citizens will be labeled terrorists by our own government and may lose the protection of the Geneva conventions and our very own Constitution. where does it stop? On a final point, I have no problems with moderate torture but when heavy physical discomfort trenscends into extreme physical pain and permenant damage, I condemn that.

Two wrongs will never, in my book, make a right.

it really gets me when those folks who wave the Bible or drone on about the 10 Commandments condone torture in any form. So much for leading a "Christian life"

I love the arguement: well they do it to us.
The schoolyard morality arguements dont work in civilized society.
I love the arguement: It gives us valuable intelligence.
Everyone in that business is taught to give misinformation when they are captured. They mix the lies with the truth and the CIA doesnt know the difference.
I love the arguement: It wasnt anything bad just some dirty underwear etc.
Well those incidents are the ones we have pictures for. Without those pictures all the people saying that it wasnt really torture would be saying that the accusation of torture is based on lies. You know worse happened it just doesnt come with color pics.
I love the arguement: Well if it saves american lives I am all for it.
The person claiming this arguement is invariably for Iraq occupation and the war in general. The Iraq occupation costs american lives daily but no one seems to mind since they are volunteers.

There is no justification for torture.

The Pentagon has explained over and over that TORTURE DOES NOT YIELD RELIABLE INTELLIGENCE.

Any person defending the indefensible is a disgrace to America.

I find it impossible to understand how one can "defend" torture out of one side of his mouth, and claim America has the "moral high ground" out of the other side of his mouth.

And for the record, the people being tortured are NOT "terror suspects."

God in heaven how much simpler life would be if you people would keep up with the news.

that's what happens when people think they "are better" than others...

when people think that "we are good, they are bad" therefore they deserve what they get.

when people watch so much crap on tv and become so desensitized, that their tiny little brain cannot understand that it is human suffering caused by another human, and it should NOT be condoned.

when the propaganda machine works so efficiently, that most have no idea that they are the victims of propaganda.

IN NO WAY SHOULD TORTURE EVER BE CONDONED... NOT BY USA.... NOT BY RUSSIA... NOT BY CHINA... NOT BY CANADA.... NOT BY ISRAEL..... NOT BY IRAN.... AND CERTAINLY NOT BY THE U.N....

torture by anyone is immoral and should never happen. the fact that there are so many in here, whom are condoning torture and almost pushing for it is absolutely insane. you people need to put yourselves on the receiving end, then maybe you'll come to your senses.

The mess that's been made about torture is actually nothing compared to what it really is. I'd rather be waterboarded or forced to listen to cheesy Red Hot Chili Peppers music than have a power drill shoved through my hand or be forced to drink motor oil.

Got that?
