I am in a budget, so the money does matter. I need it for like when I'm on the go for email, AIM, or just surfing the net when I get bored and not at home. Can you just give me links, becase I know nothing about laptops and things liek that. Best answer gets 10 points, :]

I don't particularly want to buy one from eBay because I don't know what I'm getting.

Well Panthip Plaza is the IT capital of Bangkok, although I generally am a bit careful of the place. All the tourists go there and many shops you can't really trust.... Personally I would go to Fortune shopping centre in Ratchadapisek Road (Praram 9 MRT station). Check out the computer you want and make sure they load ENGLISH software. They will probably offer you two prices for the software - about 300 baht for copy software, or 1,500 baht for original. Forget the term 'legal' here. I always go for the copy software. But ask them whether the copy software can pick up the updates. Some copy software doesn't. Ask them for a proper VAT receipt. Suvarnabhumi Airport is a commercial airport. Not only from the commercial flights point of view, but also in that 'money talks'. You will notice that all the most expensive brand name shops are near the passport control, and as Thais don't easily part with money (they think tourists are rich enough and don't need more), you will find the VAT refund office a long walk away. Just produce the receipt and they should refund it. They also asked me to show them the goods - so don't pack it in you checked in baggage!

I know that the world is shrinking and we are calling it a 'global village'- but to give you a good answer people need to know where exactly you are located in this global village- buying a laptop in UK will be very different from how and where you buy it in the US or China ;-)

Ok, if your country allows you to get laptops by mail or a FedEx (or any other courier service) without any issues with customs etc, then it may be a good idea to look around and order from the net--- you will get a good deal.

I have looked at prices at different parts of the world- looks like you can buy them at the best price.

The words best laptop and cheap can be synonymous together. Do what I did. Get one for very, very cheap. It is a very easy process. Just go to www.letsgetitfree.com for information on how to receive one. I got an apple macbook and I love it. They also have Sony and other laptops. If you want a wider selection than what that site offers then email me and I can give ou a link to some more. Just thought you might be interested. It is very easy, fast, and cheap. I highly recommend! =)

If you go on line to places like John Lewis computer page they give you "buying hints " which tell you what is available and what each thing does. Very helpful.

Just get a Dell.

Apples are too expensive for what you want to do.
You will be happy with a used one from eBay.

Costco! I got mine for $700 and it is an awesome HP laptop! Also they extend HP warranty by a year! Good deals, they stand behind products they sell.
