We have a mailbox that doesn't have one of those flag things and I was wondering if they sell the little flags that we could attach to it somehow.

They don't sell the flags separate that I know of but mailboxes aren't all that expensive so maybe you could just replace it.

Hardware stores and home centers that sell mailboxes sell a small kit that is a flag and a bracket that is supposed to snap into holes already in the box. You may have to add holes and get bolts.
You might also ask the mailman if some other thing could be used - like a piece of red cloth on a string which you keep inside the box and catch in the door for him to see if you have outgoing mail.

It is easier to get new mailbox that already has flag.
Since our mail has daily junk mail, we clothespin out mail on mailbox edge from the inside (it keeps lid slightly ajar).
Otherwise, it would be best to do mail drops at your work or Post Office boxes:
My mom lives in country. She flagged her mailbox to send a check for newspaper delivery. Someone stole hers (& neighbors) mail. They could not cash the check but now they know what bank she uses, name, address, telephone number, driver's license # (or SS # for some people), personal account # AND how she signs her name. Some woman went to a branch of that bank, check on 'her' balance and filled out a withdrawal slip for several thousand dollars. She had all info & signed correctly (bank did not ask for an ID). Mom got reimbursed from bank by completing the forged & fraud papers through her bank. But it happens.

I'm sure you can, however I not sure you would want to. One of the bigest scams going is check washing, People steal your outgoing mail, take the checks out that you sent to pay bills, and wash off everything except your signature and them make them out to whoever. the flag would only alert them to the fact that you outgoing mail is in there. you should realy find a drive by mailbox in your area and get in the habit of dropping off your outgoing mail.

they'll constantly furnish the mail. they'll %. it up in the event that they see it interior the field once you get mail. in case you don't get any mail they gained't open the mail field. now days that's ideal to apply a mail drop field to mail your letters besides it somewhat is safer.
