Although breastfeeding is best for your baby, there are many reasons why women don't do it. At least you tried your best. When I was in my pre-release class at the hospital there was a girl there who's baby was 4 hours old and drinking formula. The nurse asked her why she wasn't breastfeeding and she said "because I don't want to". I sure felt sorry for that child.

Sometimes people here get stuck on rants because they forget that there are reasons why you do what you do. Don't listen to them. If you feel that you have made the best choice for you and your baby then that's all that matters. :)

I take it you mean you switched your baby to either formula or whole milk. It's best for both you and baby not to make a sudden switch, but rather wean off gradually. Not only is it healthier for Baby, but it will make you much more comfortable, as your milk production will gradually slow down and stop. However, I realize this is not always possible. If this is the case, do you have a breast pump? I would recommend pumping. Your baby can either drink what you pumped in a sippy cup or bottle, or you can simply throw it away. If not, and this is going to sound really funny, but just squeeze the milk out. My son weaned himself at 13 months, and it was smooth sailing for both of us for weeks. Then I was at a wedding, and the groom's newborn nephew started crying. Lo and behold, my milk came right back in. I had to go into the bathroom to express my milk - maybe a bit embarrassing, but not as bad as walking around a party with milk stains on my chest! What you do produce will gradually slow down and then stop - you won't be producing milk forever, so don't worry.

the breast produce milk depending on the baby's needs. if the baby has stopped feeding, then the breast will eventually reduce the production of milk until it just dries up.

if you need to stop breastfeeding for only a short period, you could express the milk, and freeze it. that way, your supply of milk is maintained

The milk will dry up on its own. Don't pump or express milk because that will just cause you to produce more. Use nursing pads if you are leaking. You might call your doctor and see if there is something he can give you to help. Both of my kids were weaned gradually, so I never had any problem with the milk, my body just stopped producing it.

Hi there!

When I stopped, I asked my dr. about the medicine to dry up my milk supply. He explained that they do not prescribe it any longer because it posed complications (adversely impacted women's ability to produce hormones, leaving them on permanent hormone replacement therapy... ugh!).

Here's the advice he gave me:

- Go cold turkey. Do not nurse, pump or express.
- Avoid hot showers.
- Avoid any nipple stimulation.
- Use cold packs.
- Take advil as needed.

Within about 3 days, the pain will subside. Within a few weeks, you should see minimal leaking.

ill keep this short ans sweet, I know that this sounds odd but put cabbage leaves in your bra and then an ace bandage real tightly aroound that for about 2-3 days. benadryl also does the trick.
