it "rattles" when it idles and when it's in Drive. it's not as bad when it's in park. it's worse when it's cold. it kinda sounds like the engine is made entirely out of rattle (spray paint) cans.

it's a '98 subaru legacy outback
also has the "check engine" light on (but that came on long before the rattle)

erict-
i got rid of a Toyota with a ton of problems (regardless of my maintenance) at a fraction of the miles, FOr my Subaru, which hasn't given me any major problems as of yet. that's 80K miles just doing minor, routine maintenance, on a high mileage car. the Toyota only had about 95K miles & crap was going out. not to mention it wouldn't go up my driveway in the snow & i couldn't go camping in it...

i LOVE my Subaru!!! never going back!

Go to AutoZone or somewhere like that and they can plug it into a code checker for free and see why the check engine light is on. This could possibly give you some indication as to whether it is related to the rattle or not.

There are a lot of things that could cause a rattle, too many to get into here with the information given. Could be as simple as something loose or could be worse than that. Go to somebody you trust to give an opinion of the cause and then maybe go and get a second opinion. Also a great idea to get repair estimates from both (or more than 2) places! Good luck.

Sounds like it may be idling too low. Need to have a competent shop check it out. The check engine light could lead them to the problem.

Who thought a P0420 or P0430 code could signal that the cat converters were about to break up and start rattling in the exhaust? The Y pipe under the 2.5 motor is also known for rattles as is the shields on the exhaust when they get gravel in them. Please get the code checked for free at Auto-Zone get back to us over 100,000 miles I bet!

It sounds like you're low on oil. You need to check it before you drive it again!

Just replace your car with one of higher quality such as Toyota, Honda, Acura, or Lexus. You wont have these problems with these cars ever as long as you take care of them.
