It very much depends on the program you are using. Usually you have a number of options, as mentioned above:
For all below, highlight the desired text first
Copy - Press Ctrl and 'c' at the same time
Paste - Press Ctrl and 'v' at the same time
OR
Use the edit menu at the top of the program
OR
If you are not on a windows machine, but on a Linux/Unix box you can highlight the desired text and the middle mouse click/right click depending on your settings where you want to paste(there isn't really a "copy" step besides just highlighting)

Good answers. I use the 'edit' button in the toolbar at top of your page. You click left mouse button & drag to point you wish to stop is first step, then do options:
cut - - highlighted portion will empty that spot to be pasted.
copy - - highlighted portion remains; made extra copy.
paste - - either the 'cut' or the 'copy' portion.

Highlight the file or folder or text that you want to cut and paste by either clicking once on it or dragging your cursor along the text to highlight it in blue. Then, click on "edit - cut" at the top, move your cursor to the place where you want to place the item, then click on "edit - paste"

Highlight the bits you want, click EDIT/COPY, move to new location, click EDIT/PASTE
Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V does the same thing.

this commonly means copy (ctrl + c) and paste (ctrl + v). ie copy a selection of text from one document to another.
