If a young girl has kids she shouldn't be smoking around them anyway - so it's probably a good thing. If young people cannot buy cigarettes I imagine it will end up saving a lot of their lives.
For shop workers it's a nightmare trying to tell the difference between a 16 year old and an 18 year old when it comes to selling cigarettes and alcohol - because there isn't really much of a difference in their appearance. This new law should help to make things a lot easier for them. :-)

Laws are written so that in case a girl does get pregnant at 16, she can get married in order for the child to be legitimate and for the father to take responsibility. Generally she has to have consent of her parents at that age--depends on the jurisidiction.
People can have sex any old time they want, and what happens, happens, and technically, they are free to do so. Unfortunatelly, it should require intelligence and maturity to do so, but doesn't--how could we regulate what people do sexually by law? That's unfathomable. But we can legally regulate how an 18 year old person without a credit record makes a major purchase, such as a home, and we can legally regulate how a person purchases items that destroys their health, when health care funding is provided by the government.
Doesn't have anything to do with being a man or a woman.

Don't worry. 12 year olds will be smoking and 13 year olds will be drinking and getting pregnant after the ages are increased. I've never heard of a 13 year old going to prison for smoking, drinking or getting pregnant so I don't think that they will change anything that much. The laws are there but seeing as no one enforces them it's really just for the public so that we think the government are doing a good job.

If 16 is too young to buys cigarettes then surely it's too young to get married and have a child! You can get on the patch to quit smoking (If you really wish to) But there's no patch or quick fix to quit on a bad marriage when you married too young. Another silly law! Maybe they should have special sittings in Westminster known as silly laws debates! MPs could be excused if they found them too silly, those determined to attend made to pick three serious debates before they can get to a silly one!

That is what you get when commomn sense goes out the window. It is like at 18 you can vote, and join the military, and be tried as an adult in court, but yet you are still to young and immature to buy alcohol. Go figure.

err no!!! a 16 year old person can only get married (in uk) with their parents consent anyways and what parent would let a 16 year old child get married!!! i certainly wouldn't. and a girl any age can have a baby its just not legal til they're 16 same for boys no sex til 16, but does it stop them?? i don't think so, the new law will not stop 16 & 17 year olds from smoking especially if they already did, same as it doesn't stop 14 year olds smoking or anyone under the age of 18 (uk) from drinking!!

Em, boys do not give birth to kids but the do "have" kids....plenty of them also run the households. Women arn't chained to kitchen sink anymore.
And what does her not being able to vote or buy smokes have to do with it being a "mans world"?

It's just another chance for the government to contol people. Some might say it is a way of getting rid of cigarettes but without the tax that cigarettes earn the government, other taxes would have to raise a lot.

You would have to be mad to get married and have a child at 16 anyway. I don't think you need legislation to tell you thats not a good idea.
