I have found the following effective:
1) Eat Zicam (zinc) tablets as soon as you feel a cold or cough coming on - it cuts the severity of symptoms a lot
2) Ingest 4 little pills every six hours of the homeopathic medicine Bryonia Alba (30x potency) while you have the sore throat
3) Drink hot teas
4) Gargle with warm to hot salt water every few hours
5) I am not joking about this one - drink absolutely chilled beer just before going to bed, when nothing else works. It seems to improve the sore throat magically the next morning!

Chew on a clove or 2 of garlic. It's kind of spicy, but it almost gets rid of it completely. Gargle with a little bit of peroxide to get rid of the taste. I really don't recommend hot drinks, because you are going to cause more inflammation. I suggest cold drink to shrink the inflammation. Also there is a pressure point on your arm. It's between you wrist and elbow almost in the middle but a little more toward your wrist. You will feel it a little tender, press it as you take a deep breath, do that for about 5 min or so, that should help good luck.

Gargle with warm salt water.
Go to the doctor and get some medicine. Or do as I do and take Oregano Oil . Six drops four times a day. V8 juice makes it taste better. It is claimed to kill both viruses and bacteria.

Have a hot beverage, such as tea with agave nectar (or honey). Hot soups also work.
Ricola Lemon Mint Throat Drops are good, as is almost any hard candy.
