Just a quick check. I have a motherboard that supports a SATA hard disk (1.5 Gb/s). I have a SATA II hard disk (3.0 Gb/s).

Am I right in saying that my motherboard will still recognise the hard disk but I'll only be able to get the 1.5 Gb/s transfer speed (similar to the way USB 1.0 connections still see USB 2.0 peripherals but transfer is only at USB 1.0 speed).

I have seen SATAII HDDs with a jumper link for "1.5Gbps only". Check for that...

Yes, I am using a SATA II hard drive with a SATA interface on my motherboard. They have backward compatibility feature.

yeah sata 2 will only work on the 1.5gb speed, check the drive and there should be a jumper for it, the HD will only go as fast as the mobo allows it too. so if it isnt sata II compatible, it work work at that normal sata speed.

Yes, SATAII drives are backwards compatible with a SATA interface. It will work at the slower speed.

Yes ,they are backward compatible. I dont know of any hard drives( ide or sata) that are not backward compatible
