Darwin's "Natural Selection." In evolution, individuals are born with variations. If that variation helps their survival, it's called an "adaptation." If it helps, then they are more likely to live and later reproduce, passing on this adaptation. If the variation actually hurts their survival, then they are less likely to live and later reproduce. You need to think of this outside of human society. We take care of our sick and disabled. However, in the wild, being sick or disabled would you are unable to take care of yourself, get food, and perform necessary actions to survive. We call the ability to survive "Fitness." So, the strongest survive, the weaker die out, producing a species of more adapted individuals. Keep in mind, many variations actually have no impact on survival and therefore passed on. That dosen't make them an adaptation.

About 25 pairs of pants that are a bit tight after I visited Mom who always says I look too skinny. Dad and my brother called me "Shorty", because I am a tiny 6'-1", while they were 6'-5.5' and 6'-6.5". I am the runt, so Mom tries to stuff me. I weighed 340 pounds before my visit and 360 lbs. after it. My waist is now 42".
