I passed on the coffee and caffeine for the first trimester because of the minor associations some studies have found between caffeine and a small increase in miscarriage risk. It just wasn't worth it to me--honestly, I don't think that coffee gives me enough of a jolt to really make a difference, anyway. When I was tired I tried eating something full of carbs and protein to give me the energy I needed. By the second trimester, I simply missed the taste of coffee. I do drink it on occasion, usually a cup or two a few times a week. I try to drink decaf when available, or else "water down" regular coffee with extra cream/milk. Sure, plenty of women will drink a pot of coffee a day and have perfectly healthy kids. That doesn't mean it is completely safe, though. It just increases the risk. If you're only drinking a cup or two a day, your risk isn't increasing. If you can't function at work, try a cup of coffee if you'd like. Otherwise, try something else...even a brisk walk to the other end of the building, out to your car, etc. can wake you up. Unfortunately tiredness is a common struggle in pregnancy, and you can't rely on caffeine to pull you up out of it.

If you do some research (and I mean reputable medical sources, not msg boards) you will find that there is no consensus on a "safe amount."

There are actually reports out there (that you'd have to find on your own) that show results of rodent tests that suggest that a person would have to consume 50-70 cups of coffee per day for the body to absorb enough of it to cause any sort of neurological damage. Because the half life of coffee is different for each metobolic response, what's safe for one person is not for another.

It's a personal decision. Only you can make it. Personally, I drank caffeine regularly while I was pg. My son was induced late and was over 9 lbs. He has no health problems and is healthier than his cousin whose mom (my sis) followed every conservative rule of pg.

I think a cup or two a day would be fine at this point. My midwife actually suggested a little caffeine to help with headaches I have been getting.

The main concern with caffeine is that in high quantities it can increase your chance of miscarriage during the first trimester.

I was told one cup of caffeine a day is okay. Drink decaf coffee the rest of the day so you still get the flavor you enjoy.

it is suggested that pregnant women not have more than two cups of coffee per day (two regular size cups and not super duper javariffic jugs) the caffeine content has been shown to result in a low birth weight for the baby. you need to try to wean yourself off of coffee. or atleast cut down as much as possible.

I recommend switching to decaf. Moderate amounts of regular coffee are OK (two to three 8 oz cups a day). It has the same effect on the baby as it does on you (faster heart rate, insomnia, etc.)

Caffeine isn't recommended during a pregnancy. Some of the reasons for this is that it increases the risk of miscarriage, and increases the risk of low birth weight and premature birth.
