Both, actually. They're able to live within a fairly wide temperature range, so they can be kept with tropicals or in unheated tanks.

Generally tropical, as they are of the same family as the betta fish (Osphronemidae).

Very robust fish though, meaning it can withstand many water conditions.

They are freshwater fish. You will need an aquarium heater because the water temperature needs to stay between 74 and 82 degrees at all times.

i have just bought a male and a female and they are living in our unheated freshwater tank very well. if you heat up the water it can make tham start breeding.
