The Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,

and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others,

even to the dull and ignorant; they too have their story.

Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter,

for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.

Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

Keep interested in your own career, however humble,

it's a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery.

But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;

many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.

Be yourself.

Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love;

for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment,

it is as perennial as the grass.

Take kindly the counsel of the years,

gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.

But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.

Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself.

You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;

you have a right to be here.

And whether or not it is clear to you,

no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be.

And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life,

keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

I am going to copy this and print it out so my patients can see this, and my fellow coworkers can appreciate this.

We nurses like to post stuff on the restroom door......i'll do that, maybe it'll improve the terrible attitudes of my coworkers that thrive on drama, and love to be mad at the world.

great question!

Who is "The Lord" to you? Is Jesus God? If you think Jesus was God, then that pretty much makes you Christian. There really isn't a problem here except from the point of view of other Christians. Many think Buddhists worship Buddha. Buddhism is centered more on a philosophy and way of life than on whether you believe in a god named God or any other deities. The Buddha is seen as a teacher and they do not consider him to be supernatural. They don't worship him. So yes, you can be Buddhist and believe in god(s), but Buddhism doesn't teach about god(s). It simply is not concerned with the question of whether there is a god(s).

I happen to have a very old print of that on my wall & carry a small one in my wallet everywhere I go.
Such beautiful words to try & live your life by.
It is truly timeless.
Being that I used to live in Baltimore area, I know a lot of the history surrounding it. Took years to get it all straighten out.
Thanks for sharing it with others & we all should take a peek at it now & then.

No, I don't.

Although this is a beautiful poem, and one that many of us have taken to heart over the years, if we all felt the same way, it would take the differences away from us. We would all answer the same way, the same manner and the same thought. No independent thought.

I'm thankful that God gave us independent free will. It's the only thing that affords me the right to give the answer that I just did.

The principles of Desiderata should be applied to the world and all its denizens! :-) "What a wonderful world that would be"...tra la la

However, I think the atmosphere on Seniors is GREAT...it only becomes less so when the under-the-bridge denizens decide to visit

Thank you for sharing this, it's beautiful. If we all had this in our hearts and minds, not only as Seniors but just the human race, we could live in peace.
