This is probably a squirrel. Squirrel or rat, you need to catch and deal with the critter or critters. You need to invest in a small guillotine live trap available at some hardware stores. Bait the trap in a spot where the critter has been appearing with a half pecan (the fresher the better). Other bait might work, but the pecan has aromatic oil that will draw the squirrel or rat to the trap. When you catch the critter, do not release it outside - dispose of it or it will just come back. Good luck.

This is the reason that I always had a top floor apartment. Most apartments don't have very good soundproofing, especially as they get older. Kids are kids. My suggestion is to get a white noise generator to cut down on the sound. If you are listening to TV, consider getting wireless headphones. Otherwise, scout around for another place and move. There are complexes that are adult only and ones which keep families on the bottom floor. They could be a good bet for you.

Oh let's hope it's just mice, not rats, squirrels, racoons, etc. If you think it's large, do call the exterminator, they know many more entry points that what you may see....especially in such an old home with a previous life (no pun intended, just there may be some unusual entries due to previous business) If they find them, they can install a one way door that lets the critter out, but not back in. When gone the whole can be sealed.

the problem with houses that old, especially if it's big, is the joists develop a tendancy to creak as they heat up or cool down as the sun hits the house. at the start of the day does it go in the order of east south west then north, the order the sun heats up the house? Just remember, I do construction, not extermination,

As I had a similar problem in a previous home, I agree that it is squirrels. They are smart and very determined, and attics w/ insulation are great places for them to nest. Also, they run along/in your gutters, which also accounts for some of the noise. There are rodent specialists/exterminators in most cities. I'd look on your local BBB web site first. Also, ask your neighbors. If you have squirrels, chances are they have had them also.

I suspect the problem is squirrel(s) and/or rats. They don't need a food source in a place you can see. They have ways to come in and go out that you could not imagine.
I suggest you call a professional exterminator.
If you lay traps or place poisons, you could be very sorry when they die - the odor.

It is squirrels. You must find the entry opening. Look around the eaves.
It is difficult to find an exterminator to deal with squirrels. During the day the rodents will be out and you can close the hole with steel wool and perhaps put moth balls inside first. Good Luck.

I would call a rodent control specialist (as opposed to an exterminator). They don't usually use poisons and they can take care of your problem "organically" Good luck.

Mix plaster of paris with oats.
If it is a rat, so I've heard, it'll eat it and turn into a rock.
Other than that, call a specialist.

You might have a leak or open hole inn roof or wall, where wind gets in, or birds, maybe a cat?
