Let the numbers be x and 75-x
Therefore,according to the problem
75-x=2x-3
-x-2x= -3-75
-3x= -78
x= -78/-3=26
Therefore the first number is 26,and
the secon number is 75-26=49

First number = x
second number = 75 - x{Because sum of the two numbers is 75}
Now,
75 - x is 3 less than 2x
which implies,
75-x+3 = 2x
which implies,
78=3x
which implies,
x= 78/3
which implies x = 26.

Hi Katie!

Let the 2 no's be x & y.
sum of 2 no's is 75
i.e. x+y=78 ( 1 )

Second no. is less means y is less ( is means = sign) than twice the first .
Twice the first means 2x
i.e. (Second no) y=( is) -3 (three less)+2x(twice the first).

The 2 eq's are

x+y=75
y=-3+2x
i.e 2x-y=3 (2)

Adding (1) & (2)

x+y=75
+ 2x-y=3
------------
3x=78
x=78/3
x=26

Substitute x=26 in Eq.1
x+y=75
i.e 26+y=75
y=75-26
y=49

a+b = 75

b+3 = 2a

subst.

3+b = 2(75-b)
3+b = 150 - 2b
3b = 147
b= 49

then a = 75-49 = 26

a=26 b=49

the one above me: the second number is three less than TWICE the first

In this question we can use the concept of "simultaneous equations".In this question we can form 2 equations - x+y=75 and y=2x-3.here's the working.
x+y=75
y=2x-3
x+2x-3= 75 (substitution)
x+2x = 78
3x=78 (simplifying)
x=26
Since we know that x= 26 we can substitute it back to any of the 2 equations, preferably the first one which is easier to solve for y.
26+y=75
y=75-26
=49
thanks for the 2 points!

Dear god, I got the whole answer wrong....

Edit:

first number: x

second number: 2x -3

Sum of numbers ='s 3x -3 = 75

3x =78

x = 26 = First number

2x -3 = 49 = Second number

26 and 49 are the correct answers. See work posted by people above.

let first no. is x
then second no. is =y= 2x - 3
now x + y = 75
therefore x + 2x -3 = 75
thus 3x = 78
x= 26
y=49
