the fact that people can hide their identities, and throw a abuse is why they do it. they don't know you as a person, and some people get a weird kick out of. It will always happen, and I'm sure it has happened to others. I say either report ot or ignore it, at the end of the day they are nobodies and they shouldn't affect your life in any way

Your mistake was to say 'politeness costs nothing' - unfortunately it does, it costs 'caring' - you are always polite to people you care about, you care whether you hurt peoples feelings or not, you care that you are a good person or not - sadly the answer is not enough people on here genuinely CARE. They give caring responses to certain questions but unfortunately it doesn't run deep enough, but it does take all sorts to make a world complete and Q&A is like a mini-world.

Some who abuse others on-line might do the same face-to-face. They're just abusive by nature.
But I'd say most wouldn't - they wouldn't have the gumption to do so. However, given the anonymity of the Net, a fair number of people who would smile and smile and smile if they met you face-to-face, feel free to vent their spleen on-line.
Basically they're cowards and hypocrites.

Because you're a ****.
lol only joking, you're not really a ****.
I was just letting you see how easy it was for me to type that.
I also experienced the funny side of calling you a ****. Maybe that is what people get a kick out of, the funny side.
In another circumstance, you may have a different point of view than me (on religion for example) so I could say.. "well just go and stick your holy book in your bum bum you ****".
In short, there are many reasons to abuse people over the net, but abuse is such an ugly word when abuse tends to be in cases when one party cannot fight back.
So the answer is to fight back and abuse your abusers.
call them fucker when they call you a ****, and the world will be a better place.
Thank you for your time you prick.

Ussualy these are people who on the outside like to think they are better than others, but on the inside have a low self image. so by bashing people they feel better about them selves. Or they are the type of person that thinks they are much funnier then they acctually are.

some people just have too much time on their hands. i think that some comments may sound rude but really weren't meant that way. on the other hand, you have some people that get a kick out of being a smart a** and if they were face to face with you, i dont think they would even consider sayin a word to you.

Simple - they have the anominity of being a faceless on line entity. If you were to ask the same question face to face the "bravery" and "bravado" woud disappear.
The biggest consequence yahoo have to threaten is you loose your account - Whoppdee!! you can open another one in another name two minutes later.

Chatting and online posting lack consequences. In real life, a smart aleck comment would result in a confrontational situation. Online, you can post anything you want and not have to answer for it.

Hello,
I would say for the sport of it all. Also, behind the keyboard, nobody is going to punch your face in.
