Hey everyone! I'm a little over 5 weeks pregnant and I have an appt in 4 weeks to see my Dr. They didn't feel any need to see me before then. I have never been on any birth control! I am very healthy, active etc... My question is my husband is protective and a lady he works with told him I should go the dr. to have them run some test to see if all my hormone levels are okay. Is this a common thing to do?
I have always!! been regular on my cycle. I don't think I have any problems with hormone. What do you think?
Thanks for the help.

You should not need to have the hormone levels drawn unless there is a problem. It is normal to see a Dr. for the first time around the 8th week of pregnancy. If you are concerned about the baby for whatever reason (spotting, cramping, etc), or if you just want their opinion, you could call to request the tests. Otherwise, it's safe and very normal to wait until the 8th week. I wish you the best!

I am 100% healthy, very active and never had a problem with my health. When I got pregnant the doctor recommended that I go and see her right away as a precautionary things. It's a great thing I did! I have low progesterone. (Progesterone is the hormone that makes your uterine wall thicker, preventing your periods thus preventing miscarriage.) I had to take a suppository up until the twelfth week which is when the placenta take over the function of producing progesterone. My doctor didn't find out about it until I was 7 weeks pregnant and I am now 19 weeks and everything is fine. Chances are you will be great but it is definitely a good idea to get things checked out.

I've never had a regular cycle, so when I found out I was pregnant, they put me on pregesterone right away and sent my blood work out immediately. I am 7 weeks and 4 days now, have had an ultrasound, but do not have the pelvic exam scheduled until 9 weeks. I think everyone is diffferent and if your doctor thinks your okay, you should be fine. From what I understand, many people with normal pregnancies aren't required to see the OB until the first exam at 8 weeks.

No, it's not necessary until like 12 weeks. I went when I was 16 weeks, just because I had to get on insurance. I know someone that didn't go to the doctor until they were 20 weeks...it's ok...you'll be fine...Yes, the hormone things, they will take a lot of blood ;) well, it's not too bad...but I was damn, so much?? lol. They check to make sure your not dehydrated...if you ask at your check up they'll tell you, but basically they just check to make sure you and the baby are all ok, with iron and everything!! It's good that your active and healthy!! ;) Congrats, Keep up the good work, Good luck. If you have any more questions feel free to e-mail me ;)

Most all doctors will not see you until 8 to 10 weeks for the first time. What you can do in the meantime is to go ahead and buy some prenatal vitamins over the counter. That way you can proactively get the extra nutrients needed. Also, try to up your Folic Acid intake. You can achieve that with pills or eating berries (blueberries, rasberries, strawberries, etc.)

The hormone levels they check are called HCG levels and it is just to make sure the pregnancy is viable. Also on your first appointment they will do all kinds of blood work just to make sure everything is OK, its normal.
If you are worried about anything then call and see if you can make an earlier appointment.
If it is just a woman at work telling your husband to tell you what to do then I wouldn't worry about it and just go to your regular doctors appointment
P.S I have had three kids and I am on my fourth pregnancy so I have learned not to sweat the small stuff :)

The only thing I would say is to get on a prenatal vitiman to make sure you are getting enough folic acid, iron, etc for the baby. Get a baby book like your pregnancy week by week so you can know what you should not eat, etc. I dont think it is that important to go to the doc early on unless you are concerned something is wrong. Just take care of yourself and that little one of yours :-) Get an appointment to see the doc if you have questions on how to treat your pregnant body, or if it will ease your mind to have the confirmation. God bless!

No, I don't believe this is neccesary. I'm pregnant with my second and have never had my hormone levels checked. It's very common for the doctor to postone seeing you until your a little further along. Don't stress about anything, everything is just the way it should be right now.

I wouldn't bother unless you have had problems in the past with sustaining pregnancies. Most doctors don't run this unless you have had past miscarriages. It's completely normal to not see your doctor for the first time until 8-10wks. Congrats!!

Start your vitamins, I am sure your doctor already covered that with you over the phone.

There is no rush. Seeing your Dr. at 9 weeks should be fine. If you had a previous miscarriage I would consider going earlier, but since you are basically healthy, no.
