Get rid of all fruit or veggies off countertops, wash countertops with bleach solution and make sure garbage has no fruit or veggies in it either. Maybe wash it down too.

They may be drain flies, not fruit flies. They live in the water in the trap or the gunk along the pipe sides. Pour PineSol or other cleaner down each drain, cover or close the drain and leave for awhile (all that pine drives me ill). Come back after a few hours and run hot water down each drain. That usually does it. Another thought is Kaboom toiletbowl cleaner. (other toilet cleaner is probably too caustic for plastic pipes) It foams up, keep the drain open this time. After it settles, about 15 minutes, run hot water down through.

First, find the source.. ie. bad fruit or veggies, (empty beer or pop cans).. get rid of it... then put any other fruit and veggies in the fridge, within a few days you won't have any fruit flies, if there is nothing for them to eat. also set out small cups of apple cider vinegar cover with plastic wrap and poke a small hole in it , they will go in it because it attracts them, and die because they can't get out, those buggers aren't smarter than we are!... good bye nasty fruit flies!.. good luck!

Pour a jar half-full of apple cider vinegar, put saran wrap over the top and punch some holes in it. The fruit flies will go right for it!

Get a quart jar, put about two inches of vinigar in it.
Roll a piece of paper into a cone with the small opening about an inch across and the large opening 6 - 8 inches across so that when you put it in the jar (small end first) the small end is about an inch above the vinigar. The vinigar attracts the flies, they find their way in, but cant get out and they drown in vinigar.
It is an amazing thing. You'll be rid of them in a day.

I had this problem myself over the summer. Good 'ol fashioned fly paper strips from the hardware store solved the problem in just two days.
To keep them from comming back (this sounds nuts!) Scrub bananas, melons, and any other produce you leave on the countertop as soon as you bring them home. Most people dont think to wash bananas and melons because you don't eat the skins, but they nearly ALWAYS have fruit fly eggs on them when you buy them.
