I've turned my fear of failure into motivation. After nearly 20 years of working for other companies and seeing miserable management failures, ineptitude, selfishness, backstabbing, and just plain ego I keep telling myself that if I don't make it on my own I know what I have to go back to.

I trust myself with my future more than I trust a company of strangers.

Any new venture whether it be business or personal; your nerves will feel the same. Personally you may not be ashamed to fall flat on your face. However, you are talking about financially starting a business that may or may not succeed and the pressure of checking and double checking how it should work out. Lucky for you, you have confident and supportive co workers on your side but don't let others know more about any aspects of your business than you do. If you are clueless about something, seek advice and understand everything policy and procedurally inside and out.
Good Luck

The only way to get over fear is action. By doing what we fear we find that the fear will go away. It is true that most businesses fail, but almost every rich man in the world owns a business. Most of them had 3-4 businesses fail before they had one work.

Read the book "The E Myth"

(the e is for entrepeneur)

It is a book for exactly you and your situation. It is brilliant, and You will feel empowered after reading it.

Your fears are normal...but the only real failure comes when you go on not acting on your dreams and goals.

What is your "design" specialty? I am in a business that is design dependent !

Start slow/part-time. As they say, don't give up your day job.

Research the tax implications, how you would set yourself up, etc. by talking to someone who has done it before.
