1. Write songs
2. Sing them yourself and find other singers willing to perform them. This is how you build a reputation. You probably won't get paid for quite some time.
3. When someone approaches you about **paying** you, then you get a music publishing lawyer.
4. When you have multiple, **paying** songwriting gigs, then consider an agent.

Ask local musicians if you can write songs for them.
