There's an abandoned house across the street where I live. I have always suspected that there was people breaking in the house and today I actually saw someone going in. I fear for my safety because I come home sometimes very late at night. I would like something to be done about this house but I'm not sure how to go about it. Please help!

Contact the city, or search for the owner information in the records dept of your local court house. Also report the activity to the local police dept, so they can keep an eye out on the property.

If you have cooperative police, definitely keep them updated any time you see someone go inside the house. If the police aren't so motivated, find out who owns the house, if it is a repossession owned by a bank, call them and tell them their property is "unsecured and vacant" and they will most likely send out someone to board up the place and they usually do a pretty good job. Also, if your area has a code enforcement department, call them for lots of little things, like if the grass is too long, there is a broken window, just get the house on a list and then tell them it is unsecured and vacant. If the homeowner doesn't take care of boarding it up, the city might do it and charge them as a public safety issue. Good luck and remember to stay safe. The people going inside the house could be anyone from an appraiser, to a real estate agent, to an unsavory character, so make sure that you stay safe first.

Tell the police what you saw. This may be people stealing from the house, or it could develop into a drug house. If you let it go, it will only get worse. Tell the neighbors to watch it, too.

If you make it obvious that the neighbors are watching, you might discourage people from going into the house. Have everyone stand outside and watch. Take pictures of people and their cars. Write down the license numbers. And turn everything over to the police. Word will get around that this isn't a good place to go.

Get over it! People that break into houses do not want to break into your house. I break into abandoned houses and I've no interest in inhabited houses. Leave it alone. Abandoned houses are gorgeous and uptight, whiney people like yourself ruin it for the rest of us.

First call the police ask for 'patrol watch' on the place. 2nd Get it condemned? then try to buy it yourself. 3rd Get the mayor involved. Report it to your local newspaper.
