There are many people who do mathematics related work with masters degree or even bachelors. Most people who deem themselves mathematicians, though, have PhDs.

Very glad to hear that you're enthusiastic about math. It's my work (I teach and research at a college) and I love it. Below is a link to a page about mathematics career options hosted by the American Mathematical Society.

If you want to work AS a mathematician, you need a PhD in mathematics.

If you want a job that uses a lot of mathematics, then the minimum you would need is two years of calculus, a course in linear algebra and a course in statistics. If you do this, then you should get a BS in engineering, mathematics, computer science, finance or economics.

Besides becoming a math professor which requires you to have a PhD and postdoc preferably?
