No you don't have to tell , but why would you want to keep it secret ??
If you are going to a competitor then perhaps he is worried you will pass on info , but your current contract would bar you from that sort of thing .
Your new company will contact your current company at some stage to confirm all the data you supplied on your application was factually correct , so he will probably get to know anyway
