When I go to device manager display adapters is not there. When I go to diaxdiag, and go to display--everything is empty. This computer worked yesterday, but I had to reinstall windows xp, and it wiped everything out.

You will have to go to the manufacturers website that made the computer to download the drivers you need to make it work.
Some examples are

http://www.toshiba.com
http://www.hp.com they also do compaq

If you have a dell the site. Is support.dell.com. Go to drivers and downloads. Enter the service tag for the system. And a list of drivers available should come up. Find the one you need and see if it there. Also try the resources/drivers disc.
