"Coupons" to help clean the house while mom takes a much needed nap or a gift certificate for a pedicure or massage while you offer to care for the newborn. Maybe some gift certificates to a good house keeper/maid.

Well, you could get a gift card to somewhere like walmart, or Babies 'R' Us. That would be useful for her to use on diapers, formula, baby medicine, etc. Things you don't expect to need. Or you could do something original like a coupon book for the new mom, with things like free baby sitting, cleaning the house, cooking dinner, just simple things that will be affected by the new baby. Or if she has everything she needs you could make her a scrap book of the baby, ultrasound pics, etc. I'm sure you could obtain these items w/o her knowing from the daddy or someone. If she has everything she needs for the baby, then you could get something for the mommy. A spa package, gym membership(be careful w/ this one), salon package to get her hair and nails done, a gift card to her fav. store for post baby clothes. Good Luck, hope this helps.

Diapers, baby food for the future, a baby food hand blender so she can make it at home, feeding supplies (these are sometimes forgotten at showers) such as sippy cups, plates, spoons, etc. (you can never have enough of these either), a trash bag dispenser for diaper changes on the go, books, toys, gift certificate to photo place.

Diapers! Get a size 2 or 3! Your baby will be wearing newborn or size 1 diapers for a while then it seems like you just wake up one day and they don't fit anymore! Then, you have to run out and get some if you aren't prepared. That's what I would do anyway!

Gift cards or a gift certificate to a good carry out restaurant. They are not going to want to cook once baby is born and that will be a load off of their minds! Also, maybe a gift certificate to a photography studio.... it's always great to have professional photos done. Do something different.

Gift card, savings bond, photo frame, a super cute hand made set of "babysitting coupons", anything personalized

personalized stuff, you can give at a shower... then take it back and wait for the child to be born; inscribe it with the details (many parents change the name even) and regift it!

I would say something really nice and special, like a baby book or a baby photo album. It's a thoughtful gift and believe it or not, most people don't seem to think of it.

I got a baby blanket, it was water proff, and had play station. It was my favorite gift. Playschool make it.
After I was done, I give it to a friend that does home daycare. She loves it. Wash up easy, and still look great

Some times gifts like this are the best

Gift certificates, to a babies - r - us or Target.
You always fill a basket with diapers and wipes...she could always use those (not the new born, size 2 and up)

Everyone always forgets about the colic meds and stuff for diaper rash. My wife and I always try to get a basket. We line it with a small pack of diapers and fill it with different baby meds.
