if the winds are out of the southwest ahead of a fast moving cold front and behind it northwest, what direction are the winds out of during the actual passgae of the cold front, not after it passes through? would they be strong too?

Typically, as the frontal boundary gets very near (within a few miles) the wind will diminish and begin to turn more westerly. This is because the front normally lies in the middle of the pressure trough, where the gradient is weakest. Once the front passes, winds quickly increase as the pressure gradient increases again.

When cold front passes, there will be a wind shift of 45 degrees to 180 degrees.As per your statement, the wind shift is 90 degrees.So you can assume a shift of 45 degrees(half) when it was overhead and accordingly the direction would have been westerly.
As line-squalls and turbulence are possible when it is crossing, the wind may be very strong sometimes.
