Wow, are we two alike! My sentiments exactly.
On to the answer, I think? Its the insecurity built into all of us social beings, that overriding need to be accepted rather than rejected. So the truth is no longer black and white, but shades of grey or whatever will make me look better to you. How many people do you actually know that have real, long standing principles and the courage to stand by them? I'll warrant not more than a few, the same for me. I treat them like me, with trust, respect and humility. I can speak and I can listen and we all learn and grow.
Not so with the general populace, but I do not compromise my principles for them or anyone else, nor should you. You need to go out in this big old world and find others like yourself, just like my hero Diogenes did back in ancient times. What you will probably find is a person of high intellect, not a fashion bug, with just a tad of cynacism in their voice, who no doubt will be sizing you up, just as you should be doing.
So, ignore or at least tolerate the sheep. Be you, others like you will come along.

It's much easier to make yourself into something else online as no-one would ever know. Also by pretending it would impress others who would then look up to the person.
Being honest with yourself is probably the most important thing.
Negative judgement plays a big part in not speaking the truth about one's self or an issue, sometimes it can be awkward.

They really are. Spirits know I am. It has to do, I'm afraid, with your early life and whether or not you were allowed to voice your opinion without lots of negative retribution. I was never allowed the luxury and now I have many problems with being open and honest with my husband but I do work on it every day. We have a fairly good relationship but I know that there are things that I may never be great at. Some people are raised to be doormats. They go from 'doormat to a kaiser-mother' to 'doormat to a employer/spouse/child.' It's sad, really, but at least I know that I have this problem. It's the first step. For those of us who can't express ourselves, we often find ourselves sick and in depressing situations.

Maybe some of them are not confident that what they have to say is the truth. More likely, they are afraid that others will consider it sufficiently blunt as to be rude, and in violation of the Community Guidelines.
I have learned the art of obfuscation since I started on Answers.

they are not self-confident and do not have trust in themselves. truth is not hugely popular in social circles and often people who tell it are ostracised as being too freaky, too direct.
don't worry so much about them, they will experience life stuff and find out they had all the answeres all along.
if they still don't get it, they will have to do the life stuff over again (with a different theme) until they understand.
don't let it put you off honesty, ok?
people seem driven by popular opinion, so to break the ice with something untested is shaky ground. many people hold off until someone has gone before them, just so they won't be first.
self-doubt. it's a slayer.

I speak ( type ) nothing but the truth here on answers . Your problem is in recognizing what the truth is. Each person thinks that whatever he believes is the truth . If anyone else thinks otherwise , he's on the wrong track .
To answer farther requires examples of what you're complaining about , be specific .

Because of cultural diversification.
People of certain ethnic or cultural backgrounds will find certain things a heck of a lot more offensive than the overage joe...
I think it is a part and parcel of this new european 'East meets West' experiment, which will eventually fall on its *** like it is doing now.
Down with political correct bullsh!t!
Be yourself.
Who wants to end up like burma?
Or be physically and mentally oppressed, like in Iran and other Islamic nations...
Screw political correctness, I don't want the west to end up with these ideologies in control.
Do not beat around the G.W. Bush people!
TELL IT HOW IT IS!
PEACE

Because when you speak the truth it comes from within, you say what you really truely believe and that can be scary because it leaves you open and lets people see a little bit of you and what you believe
the truth can be scary

If you speak the truth on here you get a Vio notice. My family lost several members in the First and Second World War to guarantee free speech, This means nothing on this site as free speech is apparently abhorred on here.

to my mind, even cyberspace has room for politeness
the truth is wonderful, but it should be wrapped in a blanket of kindness
for instance, if you wish to tell a coworker her clothes are too tight because you want her to get a promotion and maybe lose weight because she isn't looking healthy then POLITELY telling her the truth is good
but if you are jealous of said coworker or dislike her or just want to be mean then telling her the truth would NOT be a good thing
