I don't shop at Wal-Mart. I have standards. I prefer to patronize small local shops.

I won't be a hypocrite about it. I'm a liberal and I sometimes shop at Wal-Mart, because that's often what I can afford. However, I've been shopping more often lately at Target. Another thing you should also take into consideration are the people who live in small towns and who don't have a lot of money. My mother lives in a small town in Arkansas and the Wal-Mart Supercenter there is the town's main shopping place, because it sells groceries and cheap department store goods all under one roof. Not only that, but some of the other stores in town can't compete with that. My mother can't afford to go out of town just to shop at a store besides Wal-Mart, so that's one reason why she shops there, and I'm sure that's the case with a lot of other people, as well.

What you know of china would fit in a thimble, what you THINK you know would fit in a barrel.

I know, I live here.
China is not communist, that is the polar opposite of capitalism. I would like to see a link to your other accusations. I surmise they are from China hate groups, and those that get huge donations by keeping up the China hate. All of what you have stated is against the law in China.

This is what Wal-Mart is doing, from a post I did an hour ago.

============

Because they have a buying power that gives them huge breaks in cost of items and that is passed onto the consumer in the form of cheaper products.

Which of course destroys the competition and decimates communities.

People shop there to save money.

Just by telling people not to buy there because of their unfair business practices simply will not work. Its not that people don't care, they really do, but when it comes to feeding and clothing a family the bottom line for most is bucks.

It's ironic, in China there are Wal-Marts and they are expensive. I believe its because they don't have the buying power that they have in the states. The little guy in China can undercut Wal-Mart and they do. The little guy in America can't and he ends up on skid row.

What needs to be done is America needs to level the playing field so that the Wal-Marts and the little guy has the same buying power. Then we'd have little businesses springing up everywhere and people thriving.

Signed, an ex pat from the USA who lives in the heart of China.

Peace

Jim

I'd rather buy my cheap goods from the 99 cents store!if it's $1, that's kinda too expensive, but 99 cents sounds like a better deal!lol then again, there's no really escaping the "made in china" products.unless I buy "made in u.s.a." but it probably costs more than 99 cents and wouldn't be considered cheap goods:-P

I never got a smiley face sticker from wal-mart nor was I greeted by a senior citizen employee at the door like the commercial shows:(

Sean, find out if there is a local organic co-op or farm near you and try to get a job or internship there. Do you have a farmers market nearby? If so, ask the farmers what their production methods are. Some of them don't use chemical pesticides or fertilizers, but they also don't bother with the cost and paperwork of getting USDA certified organic. Also, do you have a community garden nearby? They usually accept volunteer labor in exchange for a share of the produce. Best of luck!

"Capitalism is not supposed to be morale."

I had to quote that because of its amazing lack of understanding. Capitalism is supposed to be as moral as the consumer.

One of the foundations of capitalism is that the people show their support for corporate policy and all by their purchasing power. The consumer has a duty under capitalism to not buy products for companies they disagree with. This is why capitalism does not work. We've proven time and again that the people will not make decisions for purchasing based on anything other than price and quality/perceived quality.

However, we can still try. Walmart goes into small towns and undercuts the competition. The problem is that WalMart in a small town is essentially a conglomerate (which our laws say is ok despite it being wholly against capitalism). They control so many varieties of business that they can shut down 20 businesses with just one Walmart which puts all the money that those 20 independent proprietors would have gotten and shoves it into 1 big pocket instead.

I do not shop at WalMart; monopolies, conglomerates, oligopolies etc. are all against capitalism and are thus American.

Yep, but if goes further than that. It is very difficult to buy local.
Where do the grapes, apples and vegetables come from at your average grocery? Probably South or Central America.

My point is, it's just not Wal-Mart.

It's people trying to get the most for their money, and who offers it.

It is getting very hard to find places where no part of the merchandise is from nations with alleged human rights abuses.
Refusing to buy those goods will not make things better for Chinese children and could make them worse. Is it better for a child to work in a factory or as a sex slave? They're both bad, but which is worse?
By shopping at Wal-Mart, people help to bring down prices at other stores in the US. If you're a business owner, that's bad. If you're a consumer, it's good. But a lot of families can't afford to pay the higher price local shops charge. They have to stretch their dollar.
As for the government levelling the playing field, I don't know how they could do that without running afoul of antitrust law.

I hear what your saying, but don't have much choice. I live in a small town and Wal-Mart is the only retailer of most items.

No matter what excuses are used by leftist the tirade against Walmart has more to do with politics than morality and has more to do with the conservative politics of this corporation and its owner than real issues about child labor ,unfair wages etc. since most of our products come from China and if not from China other nations that commit the same abuses.

The false morality on the left is exacerbated when we see that many of these people that hate Walmart are the first to support regimes like Castro´s and usually support any crime as long as it is committed by leftist (or islamist) groups yet they all do this while enjoying the comforts of the capitalist society they claim to abhor ...in short these people are mainly hypocrites .
