Since you have an underline before the 2 factors, I'm assuming they want you to factor out a number as well. So, you would have:

2a^2 + 6a - 20
= 2 * (a^2 + 3a - 10)
= 2 * (a^2 - 2a + 5a - 10)
= 2 * [a * (a - 2) + 5 * (a - 2)]
= 2 (a + 5) (a - 2).

2a² + 6a - 20 = 0

Common factor

2(a² + 3a - 10) = 0

The middle term inside the parenthesis is + 3a

The first term a² = 1

Find the sum of the middle term

Multiply the first term 1 times the last term 10 equals 10 and factor

Factors of 10

1 x 10
2 x 5. . .←. .use these factors

+ 5 and - 2 satisfy the sum of the middle term

Insert - 2a and + 5a into the equation

2(a² + 3a - 10) = 0

2(a² - 2a + 5a - 10) = 0

Group factor

2(a² - 2a) + (5a - 10) = 0

2[a(a - 2) + 5(a - 2)] = 0

2(a + 5)(a - 2) = 0

- - - - - - - -s-

first, take out the 2:

2(a^2 +3a - 10), and then split the 3 into +5 and -2

2(a^2 +5a -2a -10)

2[a(a+5) -2(a+5)]

2(a-2)(a+5)

therefore, a ='s 2 or -5.
