The explanations in Sparknotes (and Cliff Notes and similar) are the most common ways of interpreting the literature. However, they may not be right, and using them certainly does not help you learn to interpret or appreciate literature. I think they are great for getting a bit of historical perspective or to understand how a word may have been used differently a couple of centuries ago. One way to reconcile this is to say, if you are writing a paper, that the sparknotes suggest this ...... but I disagree and this is why. That shows you are capable of independent, creative thinking as well as deductive reasoning. Good luck.

The thing about Sparknotes is that it's too vague to really be wrong, but at the same time it's missing a lot of information. You could absolutely reach a completely different interpretation, and your teacher will probably commend you for thinking on your own.

These are just someone's idea of what a book means, so in many ways, it is best that you do not agree with it. You can use them to help organize your own ideas but remember that your teachers will know about them, you will get better points for referencing them and commenting on them and how they relate to your ideas than for just copying them and pretending you did it yourself.

Also have a hunt around for other books and websites with notes on the books your are reading, then you will have a few options to talk about.
