Why didn't our government use the Coast Guard to bring water and food to the people? Why weren't boats sent to rescue people right after the hurricane disaster? Why did it take so long to get food and water to them?

--Many survivors in the Dome complained of food and water shortages, a charge that reverberated through the media echo chamber. According to Maj. Bush, the Guard stuck to strict rationing - one MRE and one liter of water per day, exactly what troops got in combat in Iraq. Because so many victims were being brought in so quickly in an open-ended rescue operation, the Guard wasn't taking any chances of running out of supplies by opening an all-you-can eat buffet. It started out with a 3-day supply for ten thousand people, and ultimately brought in 300,000 MREs and 397,000 liter bottles of water, a 30-day supply for 10,000 people. And as Maj. Bush points out, there wasn't a single death from dehydration - a constant threat to those waiting to be rescued from rooftops and attics in the 100-degree heat and in the steamy atmosphere...

The truth is that if it wasn't for our Coast Guard and National Guard, there would have been many more deaths.
But there is no excuse to not have water, food and medicine brought in immediately after such an incident - failure of our federal government leadership.

Many of the people affected by Katrina were the poorest of our nation. Many did not have transportation - maybe not even a television.
A lot of these people had pets that they didn't want to leave behind. For some people, their pets were all the family they had. From what I understand, the city would not allow the people to evacuate with their family pet.
And then we have all of the buses that were never used to evacuate anyone. By the time the city decided it was time to evacuate the city, it was too late and the roads were blocked from traffic trying to escape the storm - many afraid that they would die in their vehicles.
Should the people have abandoned their homes and started walking to ... there was no place for them to go. They had no money and no one said they would help them. Did anyone come to their door with a bus?
These people have never had a government that helped them in the past - why would they help them now? People were afraid. Plain and simple.

Why did all of the school buses that could have been used for evacuation, float down the streets? I live in hurricane territory too and we take warnings and calls for evacuation seriously. After DAYS of warnings, why did their own politicians not listen?

No the better question is why did those people not head the warnings. They knew the storm was coming since the 4:00pm Friday update. That's over 60 hours of warning. They should have been prepared prior to that even.
Even though there was a mandatory evacuation in effect, the government should not have to go door to door, and ask if you need a ride.
There was also warring's of a 25 foot storm surge. if you live 10 feet BELOW sea level, and there is a 25 foot storm surge coming, even a 2nd grade drop out can figure out that you are going to be flooded.
I stocked up with watter, filled my car with gas, stocked up an non-perishable food and planned on taking care of MYSELF for at least a week.
I've seen down in Florida, people standing in line the day after the storm waiting on water, WTF. Take care of yourself
Oh by the way, I live in south Mississippi, where the storm actually hit.

Calling the National Guard after disasters is usually the knee-jerk reaction. Truthfully, your idea of using the Coast Guard instead (or in addition) would have made good sense.
On the other hand, they can't share their water and food. They need that in order to be able to stay there. Of course, sending in (or even allowing in) additional water and food would have been logical, but nothing about that event was logical. The utter mismanagement of the Katrina aftermath is prove positive to me that governments aren't ideally suited to helping people. If we'd just kept the government out of it entirely, a lot more would have been accomplished sooner.

The National Guard wasn't call in for Katrina.
The gov decided to say she didn't have the National Guard to make Bush look bad.
Mayor Nagin was suppose to have a plan to be without FEMA for the first 48 hours.
They had plenty of warning to get people out.
Contrast that to when the twister level the town in the middle of the night.
Before the sun was up people were in homes and the streets were cleared and they were if full swing instead of seeking camera time.

if you'd had watched the news you would know it was hard for them to get in there with even the trucks that was loaded down with food and water. roads was under water for days. they helped people get out by the air. why don't you ask them people why they didn't get out when they was TOLD to get out!!!??? all this is is to have something to post about and open old wounds. let it be, all we need to know is never to let something like that happen again.

National Guard is usually called in for natural disasters in the states and they didn't share their food because they didn't have the food to give them. They only came with food for themselves.

it's called organization.. I know sometimes it may seem cruel... but you have to devise a plan and stick it out... you save more people overall that way (when management doesn't screw things up that is)
