Predecessor means the person before him...but I think what you mean is who took over after Gandhi? That would be Jawaharlal Nehru.

It is a known fact that Mahatma Gandhi had a soft corner towards Jawaharlal Nehru and his political opponent was Jinnah. After the with drawl from the race of Congress leadership, ( to lead a separate country of his own ?) the choice fell on Nehru.

I have seen the answer of other peoples almost the majority says it was jawahar lal nehru, i object, because following means not only sitting in the same chair, but it has to do with following the principles and walking in the same track, but i believe there was a sort of conflict between some political peoples just for the chair of governing body of the country, which saw a freedom after long period, at that time India needed a care and guide, which is given to a newly born baby, but the personal ego and greed of political power led India in the hand of wrong peoples, which finally led to partition of country and the Mahatma Gandhi's family members were never given chance to express whatever they have had and learned to represent their father or ancestor Mahatma Gandhi. and today it continues to.

I got the question....................................................
javaher lal Nehru was selected as president of Indian National Congress. But the point to be noted is that Gandhi retired from politics and clearly stated that he will not lead the govt or
serve in any other higher positions. There was a tough competition between sardar Patel and Nehru, people say that Gandhi supported Nehru and only because of that he became first Prime Minister of India

Your question isn't a meaningful one. Throughout his life Mahatma Gandhi never assumed any official post, not even in any political party like Indian National Congress or any other. So he left no scope of any succession. Gandhiji was the head of the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and after his assassination, the ashram was converted into a museum.
Lots of great people throughout the world, followed his principle of non-violence even after his death. These people succeeded him for carrying forward the principle.

You should have used "successor" instead of "predecessor ". Well, the answer is Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who later led India on Gandhiji's principle very successfully.

In terms of who followed his philosophy on non-violent non-cooperation as closely as possible, I'm thinking Martin Luther King, Jr.

If you mean successor.
Gandhi's philosophy of non-violence has been adopted world-wide by many individuals of which Nelson Mandela should also be mentioned - there may be many others - some more vocal than others.
