Basil is a hardy annual in the UK, and isn't meant to be grown for more than the usual summer growing season. It is easily grown from seed as I'm sure you know, and a late sowing of seed indoors where you have a strong light source will lengthen the growing season, however if it's cloudy and grey for a few days the plants will suffer. Supermarket bought pots of growing herbs are a good makeshift substitute, though have a limited life.

I wouldn't want to try it in most of Washington state where I live, and you're further north than I am. I'd go for simply growing a bit in a container indoors for the winter. Nice smell, and you have fresh herbs at hand. Enjoy!

Nope. Once I tried to grow basil from seeds, but I failed! In hot spring/summer time! Basil looove the heat. I don't know if greenhouse works or not, either.

I can't grow a basil plant outside and I live in the south! My recommendation would be to keep it indoors on a windowsill - mine last months that way and generally die when I go away.

I live in NE IL USA and my basis dies as soon as the temps drop and the frost comes. I grow basil all winter in my house next to a window that gets direct sun. It thrives. Basil does best in hot sunny spots.

Basil is easily damaged by frost - so if you have a frost free spot then you might get away with it - otherwise grow it indoors or a heated greenhouse.

No it will die. Grow it inside somewhere light. Pinch out the leaves regularly even if you do not use them to keep the plant bushy and to maintain a supply of tender young leaves.
Hope this was of help.
