I'm wondering... I seem to recall that today's (10/1/07) game between the Rockies and Padres for the wildcard playoff spot is considered to be an extra regular season MLB game. So I want to know if the stats count towards regular season totals. It appears as though this could affect who wins the N.L. batting title as well. Could someone please clarify... do the stats of the one "playoff" between the Rockies and Padres count for regular season totals??

Yes, the extra game counts as part of regular season stats for both the players and the teams.

Maury Wills played a record 165 games in 1962, as his Dodgers finished tied with the Giants, and back then (before divisions) the NL played a 2-of-3 tiebreaker when needed, and it went the distance (San Francisco won). While he had already passed Cobb's stolen base record (96), he swiped four more in the additional games to push his record to 104, and took home the NL MVP Award (though probably would have done so even without the playoff games).

Wills' extended season is the most extreme example, but it holds true for anyone who had to play tiebreaker games -- it all counts.

(And yes, this means that Peavy has a chance to win 20.)

I believe yes it counts toward regular season stats...but here is the more important question for me....for selfish reasons.

Does the stats from the game today count towards fantasy leagues? I am in 2nd place and the guy who is right behind me has Peavy so if Peavy throws a gem I could be in trouble.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.Thanks!

Yes, it is a regular season game to determine the wild card winner and all stats count as regular season stats. Kev L is wrong, if Holliday goes 0-5 today he will lose the batting title to Chipper Jones and if Peavy wins both he and Beckett will be 20 game winners this year..

YES, the stats will count and Peavy will try and become the 2nd pitcher in the bigs to get to 20 wins this season.

No the stats from todays game will not count towards regular season. This is considered a playoff game.It would not be fair to have an extra games stats compared to everyone else in the league.Could you imagine someone winning say the homerun title because they played one more game than most players in the league.Well I stand corrected, todays stats will count.Thats why baseball stats are such crap.

I don't believe that they would, because it's an extra game, and not part of the 162.

If they do count it that would hardly be fair if someone were to go ahead of a record or batting average, I know that isn't the case but it would be extra stats, so I would say no.
