"To thine own self be true" is usually the loneliest road you can walk. But the alternative is to reach age 50 and realize that you have let a committee of hypothetical people live your life for you. THAT'S what's wrong with not saying and doing what you feel.

because you were brave to let yourself be heard and you let it all out which is good for you and it won't just be bottled up inside you. Besides expressing yourself honestly, openly and sincerely despite of risk of rejection/humiliation is a way getting across clearly to the other end that you're not just a person to be trifled with. Speaking up bravely can change matter/situation either in a negative or positive way but the main cue...you have let out of such burden from inside and letting it out will make you feel better!
p.s. from personal experience of 2 years ago, it was great to have everything out despite of the looming rejection I saw before such encounter yet in the end like how I look at it right now? I was that person's loss and that person was never my loss because I have gained hold well with what is left on me and has a better life on where I am than thought I would ever be.

There is a big difference between saying something stupid and voicing an unpopular opinion.
You must be honest and true to yourself. You should never compromise your morals or your ideas if you believe in them. Rejection is just a fleeting moment in time, where someone did not agree with you.
Too many people think that they must agree with the masses, get caught up in "group think" and feel that they must be accepted by the "norm".
The great thing about this country(USA) is that you have the freedom to make your own "norm" and group and congregate with other people of like mind.
If you are not fitting in, find a different niche.

It can be a cleansing for the soul.
Yes, you take your chances in life. Life is risk. You will be rejected sometimes.
But you see, you start out with a winning argument by revealing your feelings. They are your feelings, and you know how you feel. No one can question that. When you are that open and honest, it gives you an advantage.
No one else on the outside can possibly deny what you have just said when you express your feelings. They may try, but it will be met with failure.
In addition, it is beneficial for you to take responsibility for your own reactions to things. When you say how you feel about something, you aren't blaming anyone for your reaction. You are taking responsibility for it.

the best thing about it is knowing you were honest and can look anyone in the eye anytime, anywhere. You can prove that you do not pretend to agree or go with the flow "just because". and people will recognize you as "when she says it, she means it, and it's always the truth".

Because you're standing up for what you believe in and are telling the truth about what you really feel, as you said, which is always a good thing becuase it just is!

All of the answers above are good ones. But, for myself, it has little to do with 'ethics', 'honesty', 'morality', 'bravery' or any of the rest of it. I'm just too damned lazy to try and keep track of which lie I've told to which person âº

There is no such risk except in your imagination, and then it is very real.
