Humans are born gay through their dna make up (pun not intended). I go along with that, fine. But are we the only species on this planet with this trait? Do we know of homosexual jelly fish or colonies of ants that have become outcasts to the ferocious soldier ants, and set up their own gay communities. Silly question probably, but one I'm curious about.

To Dus - what YOU on about!!?? (and it's Darwin not Darvin, unless your hairy knuckes typed the wrong key!!) You CANNOT make a hetrosexual man or woman into a homosexual just by market, family, lead in tap water or "toomany gays in British soaps" forces. If you tell me that if I went to prison and had some burly sex craved inmate force his man sausage up my rear, and I then thought "hmm, that's nice. I've not done this before, but I'll now turn gay" you are talking TWADDLE.

Kovasmomma - thanx for the complimemts. The one thing I love about these forums is that it's great to let off steam and wind people up. I'm straight and married too, but why do we have to "announce" our sexuality? I'd rather be amoungst the girls at work and parties - does that make me a closet gay? Or just a tart? Ask the wife!!

I've seen gay animals so that's nothing new.And on being born gay,I was not born that way.I happened to have been able to experiment with both sexes and CHOSE the one I liked best.I'm sure some are born that way.But not all of us.I hope more people in the future will respect those of us who chose to be gay.I was married for 14 years, have 3 kids, and I am an Ex-Marine with a very masculine demeanor.I found that I enjoyed sex with a man much better than with a woman. The experiment came unexpectedly as I had a friend over for the night when I was around 3rd grade age.Play was fun,and later I learned that most of my friends liked to play. The stigma attached to it was well known too and I wrestled with the issue. And when I was around 13yrs old I tried my first girl.Got results, but it just wasnt all that.Growing up in redneck land I kept girlfriends around just so I could keep up the facade that I was normal.Later I married one to get a job.I tried sex again with a girl and she got pregnant. So I stayed with her for 14 years out of loyalty to my blood.I put my homosexual desires on hold while I ran a heterosexual family household. That way nobody can say I taught my kids differently just because I'm gay. They know now,and they accept Dad no matter what.I wish the rest of the world could learn from them.Mans inability to accept other peoples beliefs is the reason we have war.And Christian oppression is why I can not marry a sweet guy. Also, every man has masturbated or will masturbate at some point in his life. That is in fact sex with a man!!!Same goes for women.Even if that man closes his eyes and thinks of a woman, that is still a MANS HAND on his penis causing orgasm. That is homosexual autoerotica by every definition of the terms. Therefore, every man on this planet can be considered a homosexual.Women too.If a girl masturbates, that is a womans hand giving orgasm...Homosexual!!!! Anyone who can say that I am wrong,do so please. But I dont think so.Now they can go redefine homosexuality, but it will not help them.Same sex is same sex no matter how you slice it up.And everyone masturbates,so....Same sex is same sex people. We're all homosexual to some degree!!!!!
Good question!
Hugs!

I don't know, but my dog tries to shag other male dogs frequently lol.
Seriously though, I would think that maybe only humans can be gay - my reasoning behind this, is this:
If it is in the DNA, genetic, then ants & jellyfish would simply not procreate & the genetics would not be carried on. They don't have the brain capacity to think it's a good idea to reproduce & therefore they wouldn't. The *gay gene* (bit simplistic I know) in the ant species would simply die out.
People however can think. It's only recently that being gay is sociably accepted - for hundreds of years people mated with the opposite sex if they were gay or not as they did not want to be outcasted from society. So the *gay gene* was passed on & on & will now be present in people all over the world. It will not *die out* as so many people will now have a part of this gene.
I don't know, it's just a theory I kinda came up with on the spot lol
What u think?
Edited to say: I was joking about the gay dog thing, but people here seem to think gay dogs are a common thing - male dogs trying to hump another male dog is apparently a way they can assert dominance over another male dog & isn't about sex itself. Although my dog tries to hump male & female dogs, he only has his penis out when it';s a female dog!

I had 2 male cats that regularly had sex with one another. There is also a species of monkey I know of (but forget the name of) that engages in bisexual behavior (all the members engage in sexual relations with each other male and female).
But the one thing you have to remember about this also is, we are only talking sex here. Animals don't have the capacity for love, compassion, affection (no matter what pet owners say) that humans do. So human homosexuality is much more complex than 2 cats that like have sex with one another.

Homosexual behaviour, often termed as AGAINST NATURE occurs under all animals, including us humans. I think the ministers or religion forgot to tell nature that homosexuality is against nature. Hereunder is links to lists of mammals and some other animals in which gay behaviour have been observed. There is however many more species where it has been seen, and these lists are just SOME cases where it has been observed. My own favourite is the GAYRAFFEs

There are many animal species documented to have gay members of their kingdom. Read the below article for one reference. there are many more.

Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. So go the lyrics penned by U.S. songwriter Cole Porter.
Porter, who first hit it big in the 1920s, wouldn't risk parading his homosexuality in public. In his day "the birds and the bees" generally meant only one thing—sex between a male and female.
But, actually, some same-sex birds do do it. So do beetles, sheep, fruit bats, dolphins, and orangutans. Zoologists are discovering that homosexual and bisexual activity is not unknown within the animal kingdom.
Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins at New York's Central Park Zoo have been inseparable for six years now. They display classic pair-bonding behavior—entwining of necks, mutual preening, flipper flapping, and the rest. They also have sex, while ignoring potential female mates.
Wild birds exhibit similar behavior. There are male ostriches that only court their own gender, and pairs of male flamingos that mate, build nests, and even raise foster chicks.

I think we should have yr wife on here to answer that one!!
I'd like to know what she thinks!
Anyhow, I do believe we have gay animals in the sense that a b itch might hump another b itch (dog) (my cousin had a pair of randy ones) but when it comes to emotions like your ants making their own community I think thats a bit far fetched! I don't think its the DNA either - how
can you tell someones gay by a hair sample - ffs!! Its all
down to emotions. Though provoking question anyhow!!
Minxy.
ADAM- Good answer but can not agree with the masturbation bit. Lots of young men might think they are gay every time they come to relieve themselves! And whats happening when a woman relieves her partner- what does that make her? Does that make her a woman wish she
was a man? Or could she simply want to make her man happy?

Yes, homosexuality does occur in the animal kingdom as well. I have had animals myself that have been. Also, National Geographic has shown a documentary about a homosexual lion couple, and there are a few articles as well:

according to listings I've seen on the web, there are over 500 species of animal that engage in homosexual and lesbian behavior. This includes species that mate for life, like swans, penguins, wolves and raptors. These same reports also show such behaviors among herd animals like antelope, horses and bovines.

This has been found in birds and other animals.
Two swans kept building a nest each year on a University lake, both of these swans are male and for the last ten years these birds have been a bonded pair.
