The new Q6600 G-zero stepping quad core is just a 95 watter and comes with its own cooler. Most computer cases now come with 120mm front intake fan and rear exhaust fans. You only need a special cooler if you will overclock/overvolt your quad core.

A ready built PC should come with all the cooling it needs. If you start adding extra cards, ram, disk drives etc. you will probably need to add an extra case fan to help shift the extra heat.

The CPU will have a large heat sink and fan clamped to the top of it, without this the CPU will cook in seconds and die shortly after. Should you upgrade the CPU ensure you get a suitable heatsink and fan.

If you are not sure what you are doing, keep out of the case. Keep the PC off the floor to minimise sucking dust in which can eventually cause overheating.

Most PCs these days will increase the fan speed as the CPU gets hotter, this will become audible and if it continues to get hotter should shut down with a "thermal event".`

If you are buying a pre-built machine of good reputation, you have nothing to worry about.

Don't buy Vista Ultimate, it's a rip off. Buy Windows XP (get an OEM copy - half the price) or a Student edition of Vista.

So long as you set the temperature shut down correctly, it will switch off if the normal fan won't cope. But I think you'll need a decent fan to cool a quad-core and probably an extra fan too.

Of course quad core or 4 cores processor need extra cooling or else to use it for long terms. First get a water cooling system IN A COMPUTER SHOP not to pour water in it. It will cost a lot, if you can't afford it, at least get a air solution that means using processor FAN. Get a better one like thermaltake or a fan with high CFM (air flow rate).

If you are getting it built by someone else, then they will put in cooling (usually just a fan and a heatsink, very basic, although you can get watercooling, but that is expensive and can leak if not done properly damaging your system)

If it does not come with a fan and heatsink, go to a computer store and ask them to install a heatsink and fan for your CPU.

All CPU's need cooling, some use only a heatsink, others have a heatsink and fan, I would reccomment a heatsink and fan for any CPU (especially in warmer weather)

Dale.

All processors must have a heatsink and a fan placed together above the chip or processor and if you must tell your seller to install a separate fan in the CPU to cool the inside of the CPU. It is designed to blow cool air from the outside into the CPU.
