The UK was drawn into World War One because they had a treaty with Serbia I believe. And when Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was killed in by a Serb, Austria invaded. This forced England to come to their defense. But because every nation in Europe had a treaty eventually they were all at war. One the Allied side was the UK, France and Russia. Germany and Austria were the primary powers for the Central Powers. The USA entered the war much later on the side of the Allies. The Allied power won the war. It was fought from 1914 - 1918
World War 2 started when Germany invaded Poland. Again, England and France had a treaty with Poland and declared war on Germany. Germany had an alliance with Italy and Japan. Eventually the Germans attacked Russia, and the Japanese attack the USA, bringing them into the war on the Allied side again. The Allies again won and this time the war war fought from 1939 - 1945
That's about as short as you can get it without getting into detail. I hope that helps. If you need more, let me know.

Archduke Ferdinand of Austira/Hungary was assassinated in Sarajevo, which is in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in 1914.
Since all of Europe was geared up and ready for war at that time, the assassination was the trigger. Serbia and Bosnia were controlled by the Austria/Hungary Empire. Austria attacked Serbia. France jumped in on Serbia's side. Soon Everybody from the UK to Russia and also a few other places jumped in.
The war was fought primarily along a line which stretched from Belgium across France, to the Swiss border. Until the US came along in 1917, the war was pretty much a stalemate. Thanks to the US and some ingenious and brave Canadians at Vimy Ridge (including some of my ancestors who died there), the tide turned in favor of the English-speaking people.
Doesn't anybody ever teach history any more? Or even read a book?

World War I started with the assassination of some government official from Austria. It was between the Allies and the Central Powers I think. The allies were western Europe and the U.S. While the Central Powers were Germany, Turkey and some other countries. Germany was called something else back then. In both World Wars, the Allies won. I don't know who's responsible for World War I, but it's common knowledge that it was Hitler who was responsible for World War II.
World War II started because of the crumbled economy of Germany. World War II there were: the Axis and the Allies. On the Axis side was Germany; Italy, and Japan. For the Allies it was western European countries and the U.S.

For WWI the U.K. had no intentions of getting involved in the tensions between Austria-Hungary and Germany against Serbia, Russia and France. But the U.K. had a treaty with Belgium, so when Germany invaded Belgium while attacking France, the U.K. jumped in to defend its little friend.
The war ended after years of a stalemate because Germany and Austria-Hungary basically ran out of new supplies of troops and a lack of food for their people. The U.K. was able to keep coming up with troops and food for its people from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and of course the U.S. also joined their side.
WWII for the U.K. started because the were allied with Poland, and when Poland was invaded by Germany, the U.K. declared war. Fighting for the U.K. did not start until again Germany invaded France thru Belgium. And it ended the same way, Germany and Austria did not have the ability to find fresh troops and supplies, while the U.K., France, U.S. and Russia were able to come up with more troops, and they had farms and factories in U.S., Canada, east Russia etc that were not being bombed by the enemy.
I tried to keep it as simple as possible, hope it helps

WWI started between France and Germany/Austria.
It was stalemated in 1917 until the USA came in on the side of the French and British. Since you speak English instead of German, you can figure out who won.
Many historians believe, and it seems only logical, that WWI and WWII were, as far as Germany was concerned, actually the same war, only with a twenty year interlude.
In WWII, the US and Britain were also fighting against the Japanese Empire.
Since you do not speak either German or Japanese, you can probably figure out who came out victorious in 1945.
If your grandparents are still around, you should try taliking to them once in a while.

The tragic thing about WWI was the nonsensical suicidal charges where thousands of British, Canadian, and American soldiers were killed without ever gaining an inch of ground. Even more tragic is that none of the generals were ever taken to task for their stupidity...especially Douglas Haig. Maybe because he was a close friend of the king.
And yes, the CANADIANS at Vimy Ridge were MAGNIFICENT!!!

In WWI they used zeppelins (dirigibles) because aviation was just starting, and that was the best way to make bombing raids over England. They flew high enough that a rifle couldn't shoot them down.
