My husband twice got rid of wasps nesting in the flat roof of our kitchen extension. He wrapped up well, got up a ladder and squirted a couple of cans of Raid into the opening where the wasps were coming out. This seemed to do the trick. The following year, wasps got into the other corner of the roof so he did the same thing and they've never come back. I think, in both cases, he caught the nest fairly early. If they're well established, I'd be inclined to get a professional pest controller in to do the job for me.

Daughter had this problem and was told the same as invicta said, they will die as soon as it turns cold. Then if you can get to the nest remove it, and try and block up any small holes where you have seen the wasps flying in and out. The sprays you buy for diy shops are very good, but be very careful, wrap up well, make sure you can run for cover if need be, spray late in the day when they are not as active.

I got rid of a nest in my attic by spraying the outside of it with ant powder. After a few hours the wasps had either died or left. The beauty of powder over the liquid spray is it stays around for a few days and although it still works the results are less "dramatic"

A friend of mine had a nest under a slatted metal awning. He slipped a length of rope through the slats and tied that to a giant bug zapper which he pulled up next to the nest. Every once in a while he'd whack the awning the wasps would come out and attack the zapper. Maybe you could hang one by the back door, it would give them another target besides you.

You are strongly recommended to seek professional help in dealing with a problem wasps nest. Local council's pest control team can provide this service at a moderate charge. Alternatively, commercial pest control companies are listed in the Yellow Pages and Thomson's Local Directory

Smoke them out. Typically, you need to burn the nest. If you can't see it easily, or if you're afraid to do it yourself, call a professional exterminator. There are sprays you can use for the entry points in your kitchen through which they come, but they will return as the spray wears off unless you destroy the nest.
