I was told that what I had to do was to click into 'run' and then type in 'msconfig' and to disable most of the programs running. I did that, reset it, and when it came back on I was amazed at how fast it was. A dramatic improvement, but there was a problem. I could not connect to the internet. It said that it needed certain files to operate, and that it was going to enable them. After that was finished it said I needed to restart my computer. I did so, but the exact same thing happened again. It kept saying it enable the necessary files, and needed to restart. I would restart it, but still nothing. So, I had to enable everything to get it to work, but now it's slow again. So, basically my question is, what files are needed for the Internet? I have a Compaq computer. WINDOWS XP, and AOL.

First of all, you should not disable the "microsoft corporation" files in the "services" tab. Second, you should not disable the program that you don't know what is is. If you have followed the advice i given above and still cann't get internet with faster computer. Double check if you disabled any driver. Try Enable one by one if you really don't know what is the problem.

You need to hire someone to come over to your house and fix your computer. Trust me they told me the same thing once and i had to buy a whole new computer because I messed up doing the same thing you may do. It may cost a little more but would you rather have a broken computer ($500- $1000 ) or have a professional do it for ($50- $100) less and still get to keep your computer? Good luck!! Hope I helped!! :)
