The nest sends out solitary scout ants, and they leave a trail of where they have been. When they find a source of food it incites them to secrete a special scent, they then rush back to the nest meeting ants on the way back who pick up on the scent and rush back to the food source, leaving more scent on the trail that excites other ants! before very long the trail becomes a heaving mass of ants all eager to get to the food and dropping their own scent along the way! Have a great day.

Both one and two offer valid thoughts; and ANTS do have eyes.

The issue actually equates more however to all their senses, and the LEAD ants however. They are opportunists for one thing; and in their keen senses can find residue YOU can't detect. They are also obviously small enough to gain access through voids you might never see. Sealing your entire dwelling is likely impossible; and impractical.

If they have a nest outside; certainly you can border the foundation with substances designed to kill them or at least thwart their intentions; but it's likely they will look for other points of access.

They secrete pheremones when they walk which leaves a scent trail for all ants to follow. They do have eyes, but navigate by sense of smell.
