It depends on what you're looking for. If you want better graphics, better over functionality such as being able to play BlueRay disks, and using the console as a central hub for your home entertainment system, then the PS3 is great.
However, if you want a larger and better selection of games and a better multiplayer and on-line experience, then the 360 is the way to go. It's really a matter of preference and what you're looking for.

Better in what sense?
The ps3 can crunch more numbers than the 360 but as far as game image detail is concerned there is currently no difference. In the next wave of games they may finally tap into the ps3's power making the games look better.
The 360 has more games for it right now and more online content. It will even out as time goes on.
The ps3 has a built in blu-ray drive, the xbox only support for an external hd-dvd drive. But then again the 360 is far cheaper.
I prefer the xbox360 control pad, my friend likes the ps3 one.

Technically speaking the PS3 is the better machine the raw processing power is ahead of the Xbox360 (not by too long way) the graphic display between them is probably about the same but with more powerful processing in the PS3 to drive the graphics this will ultimately win out.
Also the PS3 has a built in Blue Ray video player, if you went out and bought just a player it would cost a quite a bit, the PS3 with this built in makes it a very desirable option.
The downside is the price and games compared to the Xbox360, if you allow for time then the PS3 WILL come down in price either just before or just after Christmas FACT.
The games (choice and availablility) however will catch up/surpass over a longer time.

Yawn.
Here is the thing. The playstion fanboys were screaming it was all about the games last generation. The original Xbox had much better hardware that was more powerful. Guess what. All that extra power didn't help the original Xbox. It failed in comparison to the PS2.
Now that the PS3 is more powerful (only slightly) the playstation fanboys are screaming it's all about the power. The 360 has the games this time around.....right now. Who knows what will come.
It's just funny how peoples opinions change huh?

The PS3 is a technically better machine no doubt about it..!
However if like me you want to play great games online like gears of war, halo 3, forza 2 etc etc then just get a 360...!
Should it break.....its ok it has a 3 year warranty...!
Never mind all this fancy elite 360 malarkey, just get the cheapest 360 there is the above mentioned games and we will see you in about a year when your bored of them...!
and you will have plenty of money left in your pocket...!

i would say ps3, and its more reliable than some xbox 360s which keep crashing, ps3 has better graphics, a blue ray player, looks cooler.
