I was looking for a motorcycle helmet. Which ones are good? also taking into consideration the wind noise. What is the proper way to measure what size I am (head)?

Any DOT or Snell approved helmet is a good helmet to purchase. There is a European standard also which is good, can't remember it's name.

The best helmet is one that fits, because it is the one that you will wear.

Put the helmet on your head and fasten the strap. The cheek pads should press fairly hard against your cheeks (some helmets have replaceable cheek pads in different sizes) Wear it in the store for at lease 20 minutes. It shouldn't cause any discomfort or have any hard spots pressing into your head. Try to pull the helmet off while it strapped, pull it from the back forward and from the front backward. If it comes loose, it is not a good fit.

Noise is harder to judge without riding with the helmet. Wear earplugs and any wind noise will not be bothersome.

Any DOT certified helmet will be good as long as it fits properly. That said, a helmet is no place to skimp. While you can get cheap DOT certified helmets, the more you spend, the better off you will be.

You get what you pay for!

Fit is the most important thing. You really should go to a good motorbike store and have them help fit you. I tend to fit better in some brands than others as my head's a bit larger front to back than side to side.

Helmets sold in the states must be DOT approved. This is a pretty good standard for general riding. Snell approved is better yet (more $$) and almost always worn by racer types.

Arai,Shoei,KBC,or Bell all make good helmets just make sure it is dot or snell approved ,if you have a cycle gear store near you go in and get one that feels good and fits snug if you don't like how it feels they let you bring it back and exchange it as long as it is within 7 days of purchase.

p.s. I wouldn't ride without one
