Is it ee-quine or ek-quine?
Does it make a difference? Is there and 'official' way?
Thanks

I've always pronounced it ee-quine. Have only heard ek-quine a few rare times....must be a European pronunciation.

I pronounce it ee-quine but I know people who pronounce it ek-quine.
I think both are actually correct and it just depends on accent.

They way they pronounce it on the news is ek-quine so I would presume that is how it is said however I could be wrong.

Several dictionaries list ee-kwine first, eh-kwine second, making either acceptable. But since equine is a Latin word, let's go back to the Latin. Pronunciation guides I found online say that the e would be pronounced eh or ay, but not ee. So I'm guessing the Latin pronunciation would be eh-kwine.

As to your question about whether it makes a difference, not according to the dictionaries.

It just depends on what sentence it's being used in. I say it however it comes out based on the words before and after.

Horses are a type of ee-quine.
I am an eh-questrain.

Am I the only weird one who says both!

Ek-wine. I've never heard it pronounced any other way. But like most English pronunciations, there is very little logic to it!
