The Ultima series and Heroes of Might and Magic are decent RPG games.

Star Ocean was good gameplay wise, but lacked depth.
Dark Chronicle was brilliant!!
Shadow Hearts: Covenant was great, but could be hard to get now, From the New World (the latest) isn't too good.
Rogue Galaxy was a nother Squeenix title, its okay, but still feels a little rushed, no character depth.
Good RPGS ar ahrd to come by, Dragon Quest VIII was decent enouugh, a bit reptitive as RPGs go though.

I have play Star Ocean Till the end of time and Star Ocean 2 Second Star story. They are really a lot of fun.
Star Ocean Till the end of time dozen´t have a very good story.
Star Ocean Second Star story is awesome but you may not like the older graphics.
Both have LOT Of endings. But it is kinda of frustrating to play through the gave several times and not get the one you want. More so for Second star story.

The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion
won the best 2004 game award. Even though its pretty old... the graphics are STUNNING. Its a FPRPG (First Person Role Playing Game)... set in a middle age fantasy world...

If you like action RPGs, I recommend getting Dark Cloud 2 for the PS2. (It's called Dark Chronicle outside of the USA.) This game has a good story, interesting characters, a cool invention system using photography, the ability to build towns, fishing, spheda (similar to golf), an awesome weapon leveling system, monster transformation. . .I could go on and on. Here is an IGN review of DC2 (they gave it a 9/10):
