I think it has to do with life being too easy for them.
Humans are evolutionarily designed to work hard and feel a sense of accomplishment when tired, hurting and breathless from all that hard work. When their entire lives are full of pushbutton, flick the switch ease, with everything handed to them on a silver platter, they seek ways to feel pain and show accomplishment.
Young people, especially in the US, have to hurt themselves to show that they can stand pain and make a 'statement' about things. You see piercings, tattoos, self-mutilation, asphyxiation-laced sex, outlandish reckless behavior with cars, sex, and relationships, among a few activities designed to prove the industriousness and seriousness of the young person.
When you see someone with 12 ear piercings, tongue, navel, eyebrow, nose, upper lip, lower lip, etc.--they've gone overboard in this effort. Ditto for half or whole body tattoing, and major ditto for bloodletting and suicidal tendencies and attempts, such as you mention.
Lots of these people, by the way, end up dead.

it's because it's trendy, and I think they feel like they can get some well needed attention, kids copy other kids sometimes with no good reason. The problem is very serious in the U.S. , I don't know about other countries. i found this on the net:
Why Do People Cut Themselves?
It can be hard to understand why people cut themselves on purpose. Cutting is a way some people try to cope with the pain of strong emotions, intense pressure, or upsetting relationship problems. They may be dealing with feelings that seem too difficult to bear, or bad situations they think can't change.
Some people cut because they feel desperate for relief from bad feelings. People who cut may not know better ways to get relief from emotional pain or pressure. Some people cut to express strong feelings of rage, sorrow, rejection, desperation, longing, or emptiness.

Life is stressful as a general rule. Put in perhaps parental abuse, throw in maybe a tad of sexual abuse.Toss in poverty which young people especially feel as they may not have the clothing to feel they fit in. It may sound so trivial but to a young person it does mean so much. Image is alot. Mix in isolation due to feeling there isnt anyone who would understand. Add hormonal changes that emphasizes all emotions and you have the perfect mix for suicide. How very very sad. People do not realize you may be so down in your life, you can feel you have nothing working for you, then something happens and the clouds part and you are riding high. People especially young people cannot see that.

Im 22, I started cutting my self when i was about 14 at that time i really didnt know anyone else doing it, and i didnt do it that often maby once every three months if that, but the reason i did it was to feel somthing.
When i was in school i was in a bad place, I hated myself, I hated my life, i had no girlfriend, I felt like my parents were using me and my siblings as pawns in their Divorce and the more I felt hate the less i felt anything else. I stopped feeling love, i stopped caring about school, about my friends, my family, than one day my sister cut me with a knife and i felt somthing different than hate, sure it was pain but it felt different.
I carried on doing it, it wasnt just Cutting i got in fights, i punched walls, and kicked doors, i put my hand through glass and i did lots of other things to feel, over time I statred to feel more things than just Hate and Pain, though there were moments i almost did myself in, I almost ended it all but the Pain helped me.
Im 22 now but when im depressed and i cant feel anything other than hate, or lonliness i cut myself, I feel somthing different and it helps.
Now this is just me, im sure other people do it for other reasons, but thats why i did it.

They wanna copy the older people.
It's also a form of committing suicide. Don't think about doing it, okay?

i don't think there is one universal reason. they all have their own individual stories and reason, but in general i guess it is down to depression because of something that has happened in their lives
