There are a lot of excellent games on the market now that are far better than the mass market roll-and-go games. Check your local comics and hobby shops for games such as Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne, and Settlers of Catan. All three are lots of fun, take about 45 minutes to play, and are fairly easy to learn.
Also, if you're interested in a particular game but don't know anything about it, look at http://www.boardgamegeek.com for reviews, comparisons and suggestions.

Risk, Stratego, Chess, and Warhammer 40k ( it's more of a tabletop game but it's really fun and in depth).

Monopoly if there's a lot of people and I have a lot of time.
Otherwise games like Scramble are pretty fun.

Scrabble, because I can beat nearly anyone at it. I also like to play Trvial Pursuit with my family, we play in teams and I like playing with my dad, because he knows everything I don't know and vice versa and we almost always win. This man has never missed a geography question in his life.
