Besides a router, you can also connect internet to on of the machines which will act as a proxy for the others.
In this case yo network will a peer to peer network.. To have internet on other computers, either make their IP automatic use the proxy optional in the web browser options..

Yes, You have to use a Internet router to share Internet to other computers. You can use Windows Xp Pro , Windows Vista, or Windows 2003 Server or Windows 2008 Sever to share Internet Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

A switch can not interpret the packets from the other machines, you must have a router.
