Alert is the northernmost permanently inhabited place in the world. It is located at 82°28′N, 62°30′W, 12 km west of Cape Sheridan, the northeastern tip of Ellesmere Island, on the shore of ice-covered Lincoln Sea, in the territory of Nunavut in Canada. Alert lies just 840 km (522 miles) from the North Pole.

If we are including research stations then on July 21, 1983, the lowest temperature ever recorded on earth was in Vostok, a Russian station in Antartica, with −89.2 °C (−128.56 °F). Though unconfirmed, it has been reported that Vostok reached the temperature of -91 °C during the winter of 1997.[
